Comments & ID Thoughts

I’m located just outside St. Louis, Missouri. This crawled out from under a shoe in my dining room as I went to move it. The black, shiny body with red dot(s) made me think this is probably a black widow. But it seems small and more of a stocky build than what I’ve seen before and pics of black widows online, and what appears to be abdomen is smaller than the head, which is the larger black shiny part. The red dot is on the smaller abdomen. Much of it’s body is covered in light fur...so it doesn’t have the longer shiny black legs that seem typical of a black widow.. The coin top left pic is a nickel for size reference. Any ideas?

Phidippus audax, the Bold Jumper. It’s a harmless jumping spider that can sometimes have orange-red flecks on it’s abdomen. The Black Widow has a distinct red hourglass shape on the underside of the abdomen, and are indeed a bit thinner and shinier.
