Can anyone help to identify this spider, the web was from the roof-line at the corner of the porch furthest from the house and was about 18 inches across. The web structure reminded me of the standard round web like Halloween decorations. For clarity the photo is of the bottom of the spider with the head facing down. Behavior was generally still, I could take several shots without it moving, but if touching or blowing on the web would startle it to hide at the rafter. I do have other shots but they are not quite as clear.
That is the perfect description of an orbweaver. From the ventral view my best guess is Araneus cavaticus, barn orb weaver. Did you use a camera with manual focus to get the depth just right? An ongoing topic on this site is getting just the right amount of flash. I don’t think my autofocus Android phone camera would allow this photo to happen like this, it would override the flash or depth.
The photo was taken with a Nikon D3400 with the standard 18-35 mm lens. I think I was in manual focus mode and also manual aperture. I have several others but none quite with the depth and clarity of color. It was hard not to wash out the actual spider even with the available features of the DSLR.
Thank you for responding, the info is helpful to me.
