Does anyone know if the spider I photographed is a cross orb-weaver?
Yes, this is the Garden Cross Orb Weaver, Araneus diadematus, in the family Araneidae. Nice photos by the way.
Thank you that’s what I thought but I wasn’t sure. I find so many different spiders in the area I live in. I’ve finally started taking pics and trying to figure out what kind they are. I’ve always loved spiders which most people find weird lol.
People thinking you’re weird is one of the fun parts of spider photography! And being a woman who loves rather than fears spiders is a fun way to break sterotypical thinking too. Birding? No thanks, me and my cheap non-telescopic cell phone camera rather play in the dark.
Right! I have a bigger fear of bed bugs lol. The chances of getting bit by a spider are so low. And you’re right about the camera I used my cheap Samsung 7 star to take that pic. I love going out at night and finding a big beautiful web across my porch. I wish I had found this site sooner. I’ll have to go spider hunting at night now. I’d love to blow up that pic and hang it on my wall but, it would creep out my family lol.
Do you have any rooms you want your family to stay out of? I worrry about mosquitoes (since EEE is potentially fatal) and ticks and their diseases. It isn’t the camera, it’s the photographer that makes great photos. Calum Ewing, who Identified your spider, is an expert, by the way. I love going out taking photos in the dark. I’m going to hit a bunch of nature preserves in Florida this winter while the relatives are at Disney stuff.
It’s just me my husband and my two dogs but he’s ok with me hanging at least one. She’s a gorgeous spider! I’ve been watching her for over a week. I posted another pic I think she found a new spot on my porch to lay her eggs.
