Comments & ID Thoughts

I’m guessing this is from the orb weaver family based on other photos but honestly, I have no idea. It was found while painting the foundation of our house (so I got a little white paint on its body...sorry!) and was a bit cool 50 degrees) so was moving rather slowly. Location is just north of Milwaukee in Whitefish Bay, Wisconsin. Any ideas? Dangerous?

Hi, yes she’s an orbweaver. I can’t see the spot where the markings are due to the angle. My best guess is Araneus diadematus. The common name is cross orbweaver. Ironically, the markings on their upper abdomen look like they are painted on with white paint. No, not considered dangerous. They make huge webs to catch flying insects and spend most of their time with the web. In climates like Wisconsin’s they go to the ground for water, warmth, and hunting in autumn.
