I know it makes no sense, given the fact that I'm in NY, but I'm worried this is a brown recluse.

It is definitely a Recluse Spider looking at the eye pattern. In New York, it is likely to be the Mediterranean Recluse, Loxosceles rufescens, central European species introduced into the US and found along the eastern seaboard.
