Comments & ID Thoughts
Same spider as images 48067 and 48068. Smaller spiders found near this large spider have not been identified, but there are several possibilities. Will focus on the large spider which is 1.8-2.0 cm in length and 1.0 cm across at the widest point. Among the suggested IDs from feedback posts are Argiope aurantis (Black and Yellow Garden Spider), and Philodromis (a genus of crab spiders), and Nephila clavipes (Golden Silk Orb Weaver). Also, is it possible that it could be Nephila cravat (Joro Spider) given the lack of hair brushes on the legs?

Additional details: Forgot to mention that one poster suggested the spider may be infected with a fungus. Indeed, it appears that way. In fact, when I first found the spider on Nov 3, I did not disturb it, thinking it was alive and would quickly move into hiding. When I went back to the site on Nov 22, the spider was in the exact same position and I knew then that it was dead. Once collected, it was easy to see that it was covered with fungal growth. This makes the colors of the living spider difficult, and maybe impossible,… Read more »
Always better to cut up an already dead spider !!! Philodromus does not have the silver carapace, but Nephila and Argiope both do. Can you choose between them based on their egg sacs ? Your spider’s large brown egg sac suggests it is Argiope. Will you submit the fungus to a lab for identification ?
You refer back to your photos 48067 and 48068, but you meant 48027 and 48068.
You are right. My typo. I cannot find a way to edit posts or search using the SpiderID number. Do you know how to edit previous posts and search by ID number?
You cannot edit your post after logging out, it becomes permanent. No way to search by spider ID number. But you can access your own spiders or those of other members by clicking on their profile photo or username. TangledWeb has made some suggestions for improvements to this website. I’m sure that a better search capability is at the top of her list !!!
