Please confirm his identity. His head looks unusual. He was walking slowly across the driveway. The kids scooped him up and put him in the flower bed. Pretty sure he came from our garage about four feet away. He is a real beauty!
You got the ID right, Araneus diadematus. She looks weird because she has deposited her eggs, a “huge load off her shoulders,” so to say. The kids did the right thing. A flower bed is a perfect place for her to hunt and find water droplets to drink.
Amazing! Thank you for the reply and comment. We see more than a few of these beautiful spiders around in the summer months. I will show this to the boys. They were quite curious about it.
