Comments & ID Thoughts
I am working in Oman and I was doing some field work in the south of the country and I came across large spiders building large webs between bushes.
body length ca 4-5 cm
body colour: black with a row of paired off white spots on its back and white trip to its thorax.
Legs: black tipped, orange upper parts.
Location: Mirbat
Date: October 2018
I would like to know
1. what is the spider species/genus?
2. is it dangerous? (I am running a field trip to the area shortly)
3. is there an in country expert who I could contact?

Hi, this looks like possibly Nephila sumptuosa – one of the Golden Silk Orb-weavers. (I still need to make a page for that species to file it propely). Like most spiders they have venom but are not considered to be of medical significance, everyone’s immune system is different though. Nice find, thanks for sharing.
Filed, still reading up a bit on the range though….
