Comments & ID Thoughts

My parents were staying with me and got scared when they saw this thinking it was harmful. When I got home they showed me the spider they said was 'exotic and looked like it was from another world'. Does anyone know what it is? I looked at pictures online but can't seem to figure out what it is. Also noticeable is what looks to be a pincher tail of some sort (or is that called spinnerets) on the back end of its abdomen.

Hi, this looks like a False Tarantula (Calisoga sp.).

Yes, the projections on the back end are spinnerets. They may be protruding a little bit further out on yours because he was crushed. There are currently five described species in the genus, all are native/endemic to California.

They live in burrows, so this was probably a male out wandering in search of a girlfriend.
