This is a small spider taken in my home in Sydney, Australia but I can't match the markings with google images so any help would be gratefully appreciated. Thanks

This appears to be one of the small Jumping Spiders in the family Salticidae. It looks a lot like a female of one of the Maratus species. Have a look at Maratus scutulatus for comparison with yours at http://ednieuw.home.xs4all.nl/australian/salticidae/Salticidae.html
The Maratus genus and related groups are seeing a lot of taxonomic revision work currently so several species are being moved around a fair bit as the relationships between species get straightened out, so you may find images of the same spider with different names (eg. Lycidas scutulatus).
Thank you so much Calum – you are completely right. Clare
