Do you have any photos or video that show her killing him? Sometimes the males die automatically after mating and the female gets to make a little snack out of him to nourish her eggs. This photo looks like she got him in a carry-out bag of leftovers after a meal at a restaurant. Be glad you aren’t a male spider! 😉
I have some video shot both before and after the attack. However, because I used an inexpensive Canon point and shoot to take both photos and video, switching between modes required a series of parameter changes to get the settings right. So in the changeover, I missed the best shot that I witnessed with my eyes: a series of short strikes. At the moment it happened, it was not completely obvious what had happened. Thanks! I do a lot of “dodgy climbing” for my photos too. And I take photos with a cheap cellphone because I drop it often during the dodgy part. I recently embarrassed my relatives at a park in front of a bunch of people. I didn’t see a fence gate that was a couple of feet away so my first reaction was to jump the fence (and drop the cellphone). It does sound like the female spider quickly plunged in her fangs and venom. The fangs are usually hidden in the chelacerae. It’s very fast. When she had her legs… Read more »
