Some friends guessed this beauty is an orb weaver. Just out of curiosity I wanted to see what this community comes up with. The body of the spider is about the size of the quarter, we found them hanging in their web on our porch.

Hi, I agree this is an Orb-weaver (Araneidae), tentatively given this is a lateral view … this looks like a Hentz Orb-weaver, Neoscona crucifera.
In retrospect I should have posted the forward-facing photo I took, but I’m not very well versed in spiders and ended up posting the one that looked cooler to me. >_> thanks!
