I believe this to be a Hawaiian Garden Spider (Argiope appensa), though its legs are grey and black striped compared to pictures I have seen of them with brown and black stripes. It is living in the mango tree off my balcony on the edge of the jungle. It has been here since the first week of February or so.

Your guess looks likely, there are however a bunch of other possibilities in the genus native to your region I am not familiar with.
