Hi, this is a Wolf Spider (Lycosidae), looks like Schizocosa mccooki.
How are you able to differentiate from S. avida?
Range. For CA I think it’s between S. mccooki and S. maxima.
For some reason I thought I had chosen Wyoming in the category of spiders, I completely missed the location being California
Yeah, where the range overlaps things get too confusing and I usually go with genus. I haven’t pinpointed a reliable way to tell them apart from an image like this yet.
