8-12 of these spiders (?) discovered under one corner of solid wood china cabinet today while using a Depstech camera my husband bought for drains, trying to investigate what has been occasionally leaving little piles of white looking sand size material. Most likely many more. I may have been bit, it just looked like a 1″ scratch but burns + itching continually, not swollen. Just wondering if spiders congregate in this manner, maybe eating the bugs burrowing in wood?
Mahalo for any help.
Hi, can you fit a cell phone camera lens and flashlight against the opening? Another option is to set a cell phone camera for voice control (“cheese shutter”) and slip the phone under the cabinet on a spatula. Pantyhose over a vacuum hose can act as a filter to show what is vacuumed out from under the cabinet. If you think you may have woodboring insects in your furniture it might be best to pull out the china cabinet and treat it and have a pest control company check your house. Powder post beetles leave what looks like very fine… Read more »
You’re awesome, thank you. I can’t budge the cabinet except to get a phone book under one end to somewhat prop up. I only have one right hand so must wait for husband. Our 1970’s cement condo is under some needed renovation thanks to a water leak upstairs on Christmas eve, I’ve been doing painting & cleaning the endless plantation shutters. Sounds like I need to disassemble cabinet & put outside for curb pick up. I have only seen those itsy bitsy ants in kitchen but had professional company spray a couple weeks ago. I am petrified of these insects,… Read more »
Thanks and you’re welcome! I’m glad to hear that you live in a cement condo. I knew a guy who convinced his guillible mother that “concrete-eating termites” were going to destroy her home and that she needed to ask an exterminator for help. It was fantastically funny when she found out she was tricked. Good luck in getting the cabinet to the curb.
Your spatula-cellphone idea was truly brilliant! Worked like the
Arania Exumai charm! I feel confident these are (lots of) Daddy Long Leg spiders. The cabinet must have powderpost beetles. Someone wants cabinet this weekend so I will treat along with any other bare wood furniture (and bomb every year just for added protection). Curious as to how these borers were introduced but could have been from anything out of 21 countries we’ve brought things back from or exposure while furniture was reupholstered? Never know! Again, big Mahalo for your support and good humor! Cheers!
