Having tried to identify this spider & without much luck so far, I hoped someone might be able to tell me a little more about it? It was making its way into our caravan across a gravel pitch. Having then trapped it in a jug as a glass proved too small, it reared up in defence & was unseramoniously thrown down a drain! I didn’t want to kill it, but had my grandchildren and two large dogs with me at the time.
Hi, this is a type of trapdoor spider. It’s a species from the family Nemesiidae (genus in that region would be either Iberesia or Nemesia)… or an Ummidia species (family Halonoproctidae). I’m not sure how they are told apart, but although they may act defensively by rearing-up and showing fangs, they are not harmful in terms of venom… but obviously like all animals with jaws a bite would be painful if you were to poke it or (mis)handle it. Wow, thank you and pleased to have more information just in case we come across another…although I sincerely hope not. Even though I would never harm any spider and always trap and place elsewhere, they do give me the heebeegeebee’s! We have two dogs with us too and would hate for them to pick it up. Sincere thanks and I can now search them with more information. X
