This was spotted today in Herndon Virginia in a sand box on toys in mid afternoon. What is it?
Hi, this looks like Dolomedes albineus, a White-banded Fishing Spider.
The way I distinguish these two is the dark fishing spider has more a dark ‘Hilton’ logo for face pattern and lack the white band across the face.
The white banded spider has more black mask and black mustache for the band.
They usually have a white lateral band across the anterior abdomen also.
Some I have seen have a lot of white on the carapace as well.
That is OK though,I sometimes peg one as the other.
Thanks, I always appreciate ID tips! That explains the “white banded” name better.
Hi, see above image for ID. 🙂
