Comments & ID Thoughts

Today (04.18.2019) in Gresham, Oregon I saw an awesome spider. He/she was inside my car's door. I flipped him carefully to the ground and when I got my phone very close to him, the spider brought his front legs and fangs up. Main color black, with white hairy stripes on the legs, and bright/shiny green fangs. Very cute, very jumpy fella! :))) I'm assuming it's a female, because it was the size of a nickle. I see a few of them every year on my back patio, but never saw it that huge! Usually I see them the sizes of a sesame seed and coriander. Like a babies and young kids, jumping nonstop :))) The "babies" look the same, except there's no green fangs, or maybe they're just not visible due to the size, or not developed yet. Or maybe it is completely 2 different species?

Names I searched: Salticidae, The Bold Jumping Spider, Phidippus Audax Jumping Spider. They look very alike.

Anyone saw this creature even bigger than I saw today? Anyone can tell if it's male or female?

Thanks!

Hi. This is called a bold jumping spider, Phidippus audax species. You got that part correct. Very harmless, more curious than aggressive. get close with something like a camera, they may raise their first legs in preparation to jump onto the camera, or yes, even your glasses. The spot on the abdomen being white suggest an adult, and perhaps legspan the size of a nickle is common. Takes a good look at the palp or the presence of tibial spurs on the first pair of legs to determine gender. Very people friendly, probably a more popular pet than tarantulas and most… Read more »
