That’s what I think every time I see a spider in a web!

This might have been a mating attempt, which for a male can be deadly. There was a moment when the spiders faced each other and rubbed their front legs together before the part that looked like wrestling. I’ve seen cellar spiders do that, it is part of the courting and a way for the male to signal that he wants to mate and not be prey. He might have managed mating and escaped with his life. In that case, they are probably both female. A male would have left instead of building a web. The females do manage to live near each other without killing each other.
