Hello, I used your website to try an ID a spider my mother and I found on a trail in Gainesville, FL. I believe it’s a spotted orb weaver and noticed there were few sightings so I thought if this was indeed that species the entry might be helpful. The spider was in the web on a trail in a mixed hardwood hammock behind a neighborhood.

Hi, great photo! I think this is a Giant Lichen Orbweaver, Araneus bicentenarius. We have sightings posted of them in other Southeastern states, but Florida doesn’t have a documented sighting yet. So, if my ID is accepted you still get to be the first for this species in Florida. Thank you for posting your photo.
