Spotted this strange and unusual fellow on the house one day and have been trying to identify it ever since with no luck. Would love to hear some feedback!
Hi, this is Acanthepeira stellata, a Star-bellied Orbweaver. I think it is young and/or male which makes its body look more disproportionate. They aren’t common. We only have one other photo of the species submitted from your state. I hate to tell you that it was as simple as clicking on Indiana on this site and it is the first species that comes up. I knew what it was before I did that. There aren’t many spiders with an abdomen like that. It looks like something painted on ancient tribal pottery. A spider god perhaps.
