Comments & ID Thoughts

Found this spider in my backyard today. Much bigger than any spider I have ever seen in Canada. I have been travelling in Europe for 6 weeks and Peru earlier this year, any chance this guy came home with me? Or is this a spider native to North America? Very interested to know!

Hi, she’s probably a local. There are a few orbweavers in genus Araneus with angulate shoulder projections in Canada. They all can vary in colors too. The most likely species are Araneus saevus, A. gemmoides, and A. gemma. The bright orange is unusual and nice.
