Comments & ID Thoughts
Hi,
I'm in Belgrade, Montana and this little guy has been living in my bathroom. If you placed it on a dime there would be room left over so it's small. One picture shows the abdomen pattern and the other shows the topside. I thought it might be a false black widow which I believe is a type of cobweb spider?. Any help with identification would be greatly appreciated!!!
Thank you!!!

Hi, it is a False Widow which are also called cobweavers in family Theridiidae. I think this is Steatoda borealis. If you shine a bright light on them the markings look like they have a golden glow. They don’t like that, they prefer to live in darkness and navigate by sense of touch mostly. I have these living around the exterior of my house eating insects that try to go under the vinyl siding to the old wood underneath.
Hi Tangled web,
Thanks for your quick reply! I did some research on Steatoda borealis which lead me to some pictures of Steatoda bipunctana which has an identical marking as my little guy.
Thank you sooooo much for the help!
Again, thank you soooo much. You were one of the only people to help me identify this guy. I go lots of other post telling me to smash it. I dont understand why fear always has to lead to destruction. Perhaps a bit more compassion and understanding is what this world needs! Again, many thanks!!!!
