My son was taking the garbage out to the can and ran into this guy. Were located in midwest illinois.

Please help. Asked other groups on fb and got wolf spider, orb weaver and crab spider..I have been looking and doing alot of research but cant find anything on this guy, color is different he looks like he has a leg growing out of his back. I have young kids that are very active outside just want some piece of mind
Hi, this is Neoscona crucifera, a Hentz Orbweaver. The odd leg is actually her right leg of the first pair pulled back at a proximal joint and bent forward at a distal joint. It’s just an illusion that it appears to come out of her back. Their colors are usually in the range of tan/gold/salmon/ brown. The species name crucifera comes from “crucifer, ” which is ‘one who bears a cross’. The “cross” marking is on the abdomen. She is not dangerous. Thank you so much. I looked up some pictures on the web and it’s a match and did a little research. I feel so much better now. Thank you so much again. We have so many spiders going around the upper Perimeter of our house around the Gutter area They are so different from each other but this is the one that stood out I teach my kids to leave the spiders alone that the are there for a reason And they are there to help us keep the house clean from critters and other pest.
