Comments & ID Thoughts

I found this beast while walking my dog. It was crawling across the law about five feet from me and it stood out, and I thought it was a large garden snail at first. The body is very large, and upon studying the spider under a mag lense, I notice that the vertical black strip in the middle of its body was actually opening and closing as if it were gills.

The heart of spiders is on the top of their abdomen, and looks kind of like a along where a “spine” would be. What you were seeing was probably its hearth pounding! It might have been accentuated by the fact that her abdomen is very swollen. (She could be carrying eggs..! AKA gravid)
For the exact species I am unsure, but she’s an orb weaver..! Maybe cross orb weaver?
