Please help… found under tarp over some firewood, very small rock behind it is pea gravel. Never seen one like this so decided to snap a picture.
I believe this is a northern black widow (link.)
I am not totally sure of this, as I may be confusing it with an immature western/southern black widow, but I definitely believe it is a widow.
Yes it is a Black Widow, possibly Latrodectus mactans. Spider in this family, Theridiidae, like to live in dark enclosed places, like under a tarp. They don’t attack people on the offense, just defensive if there is skin pressed against the spider’s body in a way that scares it. Like with venomous snakes, you might want to be in the habit of shining a flashlight into dark places before reaching in. I wear nitrile coated work gloves for working with thorny plants and insects.
