Picture of unidentified spider

Comments & ID Thoughts

I’m wondering what type of spider this is. It is not very large. A little bigger than a quarter. It had a few spider web projections, but no orb type patter. Minimal webs. It is brown. The Butt or back-end of the spider was not very large like a wolf spider or other spiders I have seen. It was almost rectangular shape. The only color differentiation in the legs was just the joints due to the bend. I must say that I have never noticed joints in spider legs! Anyway, I’m not sure if this is a brown recluse. I know it is not a daddy long-leg or the very soft almost willowy spiders that live in corners on the ceiling. Nor is it a wolf spider. It had no spikes or hair appearance. I did not see it’s back to tell if it had any markings. This picture was taken in my aunts house in Southwestern Iowa. I’m not typically afraid of spiders but this on gave me pause because I have not encountered this type of spider before.

hello, this is either a cellar spider or daddy longlegs, completely harmless.

TangledWeb

There are multiple species with the Daddy LL ….common name. This is one of them, it is in family Pholcidae and is also called a Cellar Spider. The other common type of arachnid that goes by the Daddy LL name is the class Opiliones of Arachnida. Another common name for them is harvestmen. They have only one body segment instead of the two that spiders have. So, yes this is a Cellar Spider in family Pholcidae.
