I wish I had a picture of its back. The body was wider than this is showing. It was fairly compact with sturdy legs and seemingly aggressive which really freaked me out. I reached under the table not seeing the spider at first and it came towards my hand as though it was going to attack me. I’m not a spider sissy, I swear. Lol. I like spiders and never disturb them if they aren’t bothering me. The aggression and speed of this little guy surprised me. I see wild spiders and daddy long legs frequently. This was not a… Read more »
I just looked up a cellar spider. Maybe there are many types of cellar spiders. We call them daddy long legs around Nebraska and Iowa. They walk in a wobbly manner. This spider was fairly compact. The legs were a little more stout. There were two distinct body parts. The rear end was a smooth brown and smaller than the main portion of the body that is obscured in the picture. Most spiders I see in these parts have a larger back portion and a smaller head. . I couldn’t get close enough to see its head and count the… Read more »
I will say this: even if it is not a cellar spider, it is certainly not a recluse. Recluse spiders have shorter, fatter legs, and a much lower posture, than the spider in this picture. There are very few genuinely aggressive spiders. Old-world tarantulas (found in Asia) come to mind. It may not be much of a comfort, but the spider you saw probably mistook you for prey; you brushed its web lightly enough and in just the right way to mimic a insect, and the spider did not want to miss its meal. If it had gotten close enough,… Read more »
I just saw your video! Thank you! So cool. The last spider in the video clip, I see all the time. I once had a bug house habitat for my son and caught that variety of spider. I made the mistake of putting another slightly smaller spider in the habitat with him and was horrified to see how quickly the second spider was pounced on within seconds. I figured spiders of a similar or even identical species would get along. Boy was I wrong. Back to the initial spider. It had shorter legs than the one in the videos and… Read more »
Cellar spider. I see these all the time in my laundry room. They keep to themselves and are majestic.
I love them. They are so dopey, or maybe just tolerant. You can get very close to them and they do not even seem to notice.
