Your Eriophora ravilla looks very different this way. Her not-so-hairy red femurs are visible. The femur is the long segment of a spider leg near the body. I never noticed before that the femurs aren’t visible when an orbweaver is in the defensive pose. You are in a good state for spider and insect hunting. When I visit South Carolina I get to see several species each day that I have never seen before. The orbweavers are much more plentiful in SC than in the Northeastern states.
Thank you so much for giving me a definite identification. I thought she was an orb weaver but did not know for sure. It was very interesting to see her fold up like she did. I am truly fascinated with spiders and she had me intrigued.
The spider that brought me to this site was a Hentz Orbweaver. So ugly that she was cute. I found her wrapped in a leaf sleeping with her hairy legs over her head. I had no idea that there were spiders that slept that way. Today I got photos of my current yard orbweaver, a Cross Orbweaver, sleeping in a dogwood leaf. She looked like a very “Cross” Orbweaver when I woke her with my bright flashlight. As it gets dark earlier she doesn’t start making her evening web earlier. She sleeps in later instead.
Orbweavers are amazing to watch!!
