Is this a type of orb spider? I noted something was making a web inside my reptiles tank. I found this spider on the underside of this artificial leaf. It actually has taken material from the bottom of the tank and suspending it within its web. Not sure if it's being used as camouflage or to weight down so to build its web.

Parasteatoda tepidarorium? Common House Spider, female. Your observation about how she incorporated material into the web from the bottom of the enclosure is interesting to me. I’ve noticed that the P. tepidarorium outdoors make durable canopies in their webs with materials they find. I think it is very similar to what Trashline Weavers (Cyclosa spp) do. They use debris, mostly the corpses of their prey, woven into stabililimenta (so-called decorative web add-ons) to their webs.
