It was hanging down from the outer door frame and I transferred the little thing to the garden. Initial thought, fake widow. Unsure.

Yes, it is a False Widow. I think it is Steatoda borealis. Thank you for not killing it. It isn’t dangerous to people and they are quite good a catching insects. They guard the exterior foundation of my house against insect intruders.
