It's larger than the photo appears. The body is easily the length of an american nickel, and I couldn't tell how long the legs were because they were constantly up against its body, seeming to only extend a couple at a time when moving. The photo was taken on a concrete and steel stairwell.

Jumping Spider (Salticidae) in the genus Phidippus, maybe P. adumbratus – there’s a bunch of similar species in the genus in CA though.
