I believe this cocoon to of been made by a barn spider. Several days ago the spider built the structure around itself. Is it laying eggs inside or is this a type of hybernation?

That’s a great question! I’ve been wondering how Aranidae orbweavers get the eggs inside an egg sac shaped like a used cotton ball. I never thought of the spider being totally inside it. Barn Spiders don’t hibernate. The females live Autumn to Autumn. When the spider is done ovipositing (a word that rarely comes up in conversation) she has a rumpled narrower abdomen. Sometimes the orbweaver dies to become food for her hatchlings to survive on. I don’t think that part was in Charlotte’s Web. Geez that would be traumatizing for the kids!!
