Comments & ID Thoughts
Barbie Entomologist!! On my Christmas wish list! There's a few National Geographic Barbies. Barbie Astrophysicist! Barbie Photojournalist! My Barbie just drove around naked in her convertible. She didn't have any chance of a legitimate career.

I’m not quite sure what species this one is, requesting assistance.
She appears to be a Homo sapiens sapiens. The body proportions don’t quite match the species for a mature female. The abdomen shape and color of the hairs are that of an immature specimen. It doesn’t appear to have evolved netting for catching butterfly prey that is a color that is camouflaged against the sky. Like Trashline Orbweavers it appears to display dead prey as decoys. It would be awesome if we could walk up to a tree and see all that megafauna in one place. Jurassic Park? Should it be insulting or a compliment that Entomologist Barbie has smaller… Read more »
Lol true
Images should be cropped down to just the spider, I think it’s a Plasticus ornamentalis…
I agree. The easiest way to identify P. ornamentalis is the presence of its fifth pair of legs.
I saw this in the store a while back too and had to stop and take a closer look, the first Barbie I remember getting was “Great Shape Barbie”, the Aerobics one like in the Toy Story movies. I think I definitely would have enjoyed this one more.
I would have too. My Malibu Barbie just took her clothes off a lot. Putting them back on reminded me too much of trying on clothes in a dressing room. I don’t have a standard physique, nothing ever fit.
Barbie needed other things to do, like checking out giant moths that spin inside hollow trees. This one goes between life stages, which is pretty cool. One of the science and nature Barbies is brunette and they don’t have to change their clothes a lot. I’m glad to see these. People would have mocked the idea decades ago.
Hope you’re doing well. Thank you for doing my photos. https://spiderid.com/picture/110015/ This is a nice Parasteatoda tepidariorum pic with hatchlings photo that just came in. It would be great in our gallery and there’s a glitch alert. Let me know if I can help in any way. 🙂
I’m OK, I guess, considering how crazy everything has been. I haven’t been on my computer much at all since the lockdown began, which is where I’m most comfortable doing IDs from. My kid has mostly been using it for school work, and I often needed to help him with his school work. Now that school is almost done for the year I might be able to get back into using it for spiders. Thanks for checking in. I and a few others used to check in with one of the original founders for this site because she would go… Read more »
Glad you’re hanging in. I wish I had met Mandy. She left a great legacy in her brief life, I’ve read her memorials. I would like to have a photo of the spider species named after her on this site, I can’t find one. I want to do this for her too. Perhaps Kyle might want to pass on his position to someone else who has the interest? He can still keep it on his resumé. It is frustrating to repeatedly explain that we can’t do anything about the outdated programming when I don’t quite get what his hold-up is… Read more »
I think life just got in the way and he needs to figure out in his own time what he wants to do with the site if anything. To add moderators I think he needs to make updates to the site first, the way it is right now is a little confusing and probably grants access to change way too many things. He’s never been a particularly active moderator, he was just trying to deal with a special troll that last time. (Seriously, that guy has a long history causing problems here, lol. I’d tell you all about it if… Read more »
I know who it was, I would love to know more, I’ve chatted with the special troll. 🙂 I read about Mandy on Bugguide, a lot of her comments are still there. The Bugguide people referred to this site as things like, “her little side project.” They have been great about teaching me basics and specifics of identification of insects. I started learning insect taxonomy and anatomy about 30 years ago. I take photos of all interesting arthropods. I would need to specialize in a class or order before I could be more useful there. I like the psychological/conversational aspect… Read more »
What happened to the site today? Did we get an update? It looks completely different and there are lots of new icons and functions! It says Moderator under your photo icon now. The background changed color and is easier to read. Did Kyle improve things?
I have no idea. I didn’t see your last comment till just now, I never received a notification for it and just happened to revisit this thread this morning.
I didn’t get a notification for your response either. If we use the at symbol within a comment we can send each other emails. Like @ItsyBitsy That could bring back the old problem for you, but you can feel free to ignore pushy people – except for me 😉

Thank you! I hope to see one next time I’m in South Carolina. I think having a spider named for her is a beautiful tribute.
