Folks tell me this is a Wolf spider, or a Huntsman. It was at least 6 or 7 inches from tip to tip. Found in my woodpile, clinging to the split log it was photographed on. South Boston, Virginia - 24592. I don't think it's a wolf, because of its size, but the Huntsman isn't supposed to be this far north. ??

It’s a Fishing Spider in genus Dolomedes of family Pisauridae. Thank you for trying to find the answer on your own. Asking “folks” usually doesn’t get the correct answer for spiders 😉 They usually call anything a Wolf Spider, Brown Recluse, or Black Widow. I’m not sure if it is Dolomedes scriptus or Dolomedes albineus. An easy way to tell that it isn’t a Wolf Spider is that Wolfs can’t climb vertical surfaces like this very well. These aren’t dangerous spiders to humans and they have really cool abilities.
