Comments & ID Thoughts
This is a female adult steatoda gross, also known as a False Widow spider. She was found inside the house, in southeast Arizona. I find female and male steatoda grossa frequently. I've also found false widow slings (baby spiders). They are gentle and shy. 1 female actually let me pet her on her back!

That’s so cute that you have a growing family of Steatoda grossa! Putting pressure on their bodies by touching them from the top is painful for them. It triggers the feeling that they might be squished. They have a much more acute sense of touch than sight. They are happy to walk on you as long as they don’t go under your clothes. I found out by accident that they really like dark clothes (looks like a place to hide) and lost one of my False Black Widows for a while in/on my sweater. I eventually found him unharmed. 🙂… Read more »
Thank you. I won’t do that again. That spider has crossed over to the rainbow bridge. She was the only one I ‘petted’. I converted a bird house into a spider habitat for the spider in the photo. She thrived.
I recently moved her into an acrylic case. She is doing well.
Thank you for your help and advice.
