Picture of unidentified spider

Comments & ID Thoughts

I just killed a female black widow a couple of days ago in the very close vicinity to where I found this spider. Dallas, tx area. This one was wrapped up tight in the corner of my brick on covered front porch. I did not get a look at the underside of the belly of this one. Confirmed red hourglass on the previous one I killed. Home is in a new neighborhood

It might be a False Widow in genus Steatoda, probably Steatoda grossa. They don’t have an hourglass marking on the underside. They are in the same family as Black Widows, but their venom is drastically weaker to people. Their venom is very potent against insects and other spiders. They’re good to have around. They might be able to harm Black Widows too. I’ll look it up and add the answer. Edit: https://bugguide.net/node/view/42293 I haven’t seen any research on it, but I have read many times that Steatoda grossa kills and eats Black Widows. 🙂
