This is a False Widow, Steatoda borealis. Please don’t let the spider stop your repurposing. It is not dangerous to people and seems to be common in Southern New England. They are in the same family as Black Widows, Theridiidae, but the venom is drastically weaker to humans. The species in this family are Cobweavers, they make true cobwebs. They avoid being seen in the light or out in the open because that exposes them to predators. They usually will stop moving when a light is turned on. I didn’t see the other photo when I posted this, that many spiders in one spot could really get in the way of using the bureau. They can survive outdoors in a sheltered spot, like a compost bin, leaf pile or shed. The males will leave if they smell a female of their species.
