It’s an invasive species of insect that presents a great risk to food crops and hardwood trees. The link I included has the link to the form for reporting the sighting in New Jersey. Your photo is plenty, you don’t need the specimen. Please stomp it and kill any more that you see. Infested trees need to be removed and burned. Early stage nymph, Spotted Lantern Fly. The Spotted Lanternfly (Lycorma delicatula) is native to China and was first detected in Pennsylvania in September 2014. Spotted lanternfly feeds on a wide range of fruit, ornamental and woody trees, with tree-of-heaven being one of the preferred hosts. Spotted lanternflies are invasive and can be spread long distances by people who move infested material or items containing egg masses.
