Comments & ID Thoughts
It's my first time to see this large spider, about 3/4" in size. It's moved into my kitchen vent.
Can you please name it and let me know if it is toxic, or if it can continue to reside there safely.
This is in San Francisco Bay Area. Thanks, Lillian

That is a cobweb spider called Steatoda nobilis. A noble false widow. A fairly recent import from Europe. They are not aggressive and don’t have medically significant venom. Everyone’s immune system is different though. They do tend to produce a lot of spiderlings. They have become very common where I am from in Europe. They have never caused me any issues.
Nod, Thank you so much for identifying this cobweb spider. I’m relieved to know its identity and venom status. Your experience with them in Europe is most helpful. I’ll keep an eye on it at its web, up high near the ceiling. We can coexist on different levels of the kitchen.
