This is a female southern house spider, they are totally harmless.
Species Kukulcania hibernalis – Southern House Spider – BugGuide.Net
These are somtimes kept as pets or indoors in dark quiet places.
Their worst is their webs where females spend their life of up to 8 years.

TangledWeb

This is our website’s first filed submission of the species for California. 🙂

I am a little surprised at that. In the early 80s they could be found maybe as far north as Stocton. Their range has certainly expanded, now including counties as far north as Shasta, most of Nevada, up through central Utah.
Two other species in the southwest are K. arizonica and K. utahana.
