Is this a Fishing Spider? Was going to just pick him up to take outside but am unsure as to what type it is.
Um I probably wouldn’t pick it up this looks like it may be a Brown Recluse ( Loxosceles reclusa), but the abdomen is a just a bit too skinny.
That is what I was afraid of, as his traits are very similar, so I thought I would check with others. Thank you!
Hi, given the location this is most likely a Mediterranean Recluse (Loxosceles rufescens). I can’t rule out Brown Recluse (L. reclusa), or Chilean Recluse (L. laeta) from an image like this though. Brown Recluse would be more common to the north, and Chilean Recluse has been found in Polk Co.
Yikes! I think he came up the drain. Is that common behavior (to come in through drain pipes) for Recluse spiders? He was stuck in the tub and could not crawl out. (Thank goodness.) If this is common behavior ~ I guess I need to close those drains at night. I have two little girls – one of which – LOVES bugs and would love to get a closer look. No fear in that one!
I cant kill any creature, but did not want to handle him either, as I was scared it was a RECLUSE!!! 🙁
THANK YOU!
You’re welcome. It probably didn’t come up the drain but climbed into the tub and hid in the opening of the drain… you can reduce their numbers by sealing up any cracks around floors, doors, windows, foundation etc., vacuum everywhere and empty the canister outside, sticky traps can be placed along where the floor meets the wall behind furniture or anywhere you can’t seal that you think they could get in at.
