Comments & ID Thoughts

My guess would be Gasteracantha sp. but not sure which species as there are not much spiny-back orb weaver photos that looked like this. The closest I got after extensive internet search is photo of similar looking photo taken in Aceh Indonesia but was merely identified as Gasteracantha sp. This picture was taken at Perkasa Hotel Kundasang, Kundasang a town at the hill of Mount Kinabalu. The web was between branches of shrubs growing below the pine forest.

Hi, I think you’re on the right track with Gasteracantha. There are a bunch of options in Malaysia and I’m not familiar with all of them. Gasteracantha diardi is one possibility.

G. cancriformis is possible too. The species is very variable in colors and form. That’s why Gasteracantha sp. is the safe identification.

I don’t think that one is an option in Malaysia.
