I imagine it’s a common spider found in UK suburban areas?
It came in an Amazon parcel!

This is an Eratigena species though it may not be E. atrica. Looks like E. duellica … E. duellica, E. saevus, and E. atrica were synonymized so for a while all three were considered E. atrica … not everyone knows the synonymy was undone though – after DNA testing it was determined they’re three separate species afterall, although E. duellica and E. saevus can hybridize making them particularly tricky to tell apart where their range overlaps. There are more species in the genus too that may look similar but those three are the likely ones.
Thank you, it sounds like a complex, shifting area!
Hi there this spider may be a Corinnidae (Ant-mimic Spiders) I hope this will help :3
Ahhh someone said it was a giant house spider? I like a disagreement haha. What do you think? “Eratigena atrica.” They said. Do you think it could be that and if not what makes you think it’s Corinnidae instead? 🙂
Hi, Itsy Bitsy is our site moderator. Unless she is convinced to change her assessment, her determination of classification stands. In this case she didn’t go to species level. One stops at the highest taxonomic level that there is strong evidence for. In this case it is genus level. To Arctic Wolf, I’m not sure if the time stamps on our posts are based on our own time zones or if there is one core zone. You may have not seen Itsy Bitsy’s post (Eastern Time Zone). When you spend time on the site I have found that it helps… Read more »
Oh I was asking Arcticwolf for their opinions on it! Not sure if you can see but the reply is directed at their post 🙂 itsybitsy replied later than arcticwolf; it was actually someone on Quora who mentioned the Eratigena species, so I wasn’t referring to itsybitsy in my message. Arcticwolf replied at 9am this morning, I’d responded at 4pm UTC with the Quora question and IB posted a separate response at 6.48pm. It’s lovely that you’re sort of defending her. I’m sure she doesn’t need it though 😉 I won’t be a regular here, I’ll probably only post again… Read more »
Thank you for clarifying, I didn’t realize that the posts aren’t just in order of time, but also which Respond box we click on. I was confused about your comment too. I’m always confused, I just usually hide it better. I’m hoping Amazon will send me a free spider some day too.
