Do you mean under the “Comments and ID thoughts” section? Will it not let you edit that? Because I think you should be able to, I’ll mention it to the admin. if that’s the case. If you mean how did I file it to Philodromus it’s because as a moderator I have the ability to create and edit pages. Members who have been upgraded to contributor (these are generally people who have proven themselves to have some experience IDing spiders accuarately) can’t make or edit pages to the extent I can but they can file their own images.

Gotcha … I can see where that would be confusing. 😀 spp. is the plural abbreviation indicating that there may be more than one species placed at genus level … Philodromus spp. Your spider however I referred to as a Philodromus sp. because as an individual it would be only one species. And species is a tricky word because it can be either singular or plural, but those abbreviations do differentiate. A goof-up I made when I first started learning was that I thought the singular of species was “specie”.

Oh, and for the common names what is going on there is similar to the format on BugGuide … if you look at the top of the page in the following link you see Lycosidae listed as “Wolf Spiders”, Hogna doesn’t offer a common name even though they are Wolf Spiders because it’s already indicated at family level it would be redundant to add it again, and then Hogna carolinensis has it’s own unique common name so that is included as “Carolina Wolf Spider”.
