Comments & ID Thoughts
Hi folks,
Have been having mysterious bites everytime I am on my upper outdoor deck. This *ahem...lady? has been spotted a few times coming down from the ceiling on her web at night. Finally caught *her and was thinking she is a yellow sac spider? I am concerned about the possibility of a nest somewhere and if these things take a nip atcha are they mildly painful and stupid itchy and take forever to heal? All help appreciated! Thank you

Hi, multiple bites are usually from blood sucking insects. You seem to have guessed the right family and may well have the right species. When they’re found indoors they’re usually Cheiracanthium mildei. Outdoors there are a few other similar looking species in the family. I don’t know how you would react to a bite, reactions can vary.
Hi ItsyBitsy (great handle btw) I thought the same thing and went on a lunatic spree of hunting for fleas and the like BLECH!! But oddly enough the bites are located on each of my biceps and have the distinct puncture wounds of the ‘El Fangos Have never felt it just woken up with them when I sleep outside. I hate to blame it on the spider and more than likely not but the punctures make me think differently. Haven’t seen any indoors. Any ideas where I can relocate it in my yard… I don’t kill spiders…like … ever. Haha
If you’re falling asleep and rolling on them or swatting them it could happen. Or maybe it’s biting flies. I would just relocate them a good distance from the house. If you have any leaf litter or weeds nearby clearing that out too could reduce their numbers around the house.
Ohhh didn’t think of those! Will look into it and thank you for your suggestions! No leaves and all that just hangs by my fireplace but it is all cedar in the space so knowing that…its a safe place for them to hang being a toxic wood for most critters not to enjoy. Thanks again!! Time for a little relocation action
