Please tell me what this spider is!!!
It is one of the Fishing Spiders, Pisaurina mira, in the Nurseryweb Weaver family Pisauridae.
Ok, so what does that mean that I found it under the heat register in my bedroom? Plus I have dogs. Please, more info! Are those common in an area like Rochester NY, in the country?
Hi, they are common and not dangerous. The bite is said to be about the same as a hornet sting in pain and the body’s reaction. It isn’t a web spider. They stay in a hiding spot during the day and hunt at night. It probably was chasing an insect and followed it into your HVAC system. Hopefully you don’t have insects living in there. He also may have been trying to find a female by following pheromones. The spider will only bite in self-defense- if he feels trapped or pressure against his body and skin is nearby.
