Comments & ID Thoughts
Araneus Nordmanni is my guess. Found in a mixed hard and soft wood forest. Walked through strong web, a minute or so later I brushed the spider off my neck thinking it was a mosquito biting me.

My best guess is Araneus saevus https://bugguide.net/adv_search/bgsearch.php?taxon=33682&location%5B%5D=NH but I’m hoping for a second opinion. It isn’t one we see often. There is a variant of A. marmoreus with the same black mark, but the legs are different. The white line marking behind the head and the angulate-shoulders that are a different color from the rest of the abdomen are what I’m basing my guess on.
I am not great with orb weavers but I don’t think it is A. saevus. Bugguide says they are dark grey or light brown. The white mark seems to always be on a dark background. https://bugguide.net/node/view/33682
I think I would be inclined to go for A. nordmanni like OP suggested https://bugguide.net/node/view/834463/bgimage
