Argiope aurantia, lateral, female. Same individual as my other Black and Yellow Garden Spider 05OCT19 post. She lived in brush next-to a golf course in White-tailed deer habitat of brambles and tall grass and pine trees.

It was really cool! This was the only one I’ve seen. She was bigger than I expected even though I’ve seen a lot of photos. I’m lucky to have family now living in the Southeast. I’ve seen lots of spiders and insects this year that I had only seen in photos. I’ve learned to not handle insects bare-handed after I’ve identified some I almost touched and would have regretted. I don’t think there are centipedes that emit cyanide where I live, so I never learned that was a risk!

When I saw this spider in-person my first thought was “Trichonephila clavipes” because they have the same shape and size. I had just seen my first T. clavipes.
