Someone in the area is suggesting it is an orb weaver. I have never seen one like this.

I was weeding and clearing in my back yard there was a log near where it was spotted. But I am not sure if it was hanging out in the taller weeds before or under the log. Has been quite dry ( a desert area ) only lived here 3 yrs so first time spotting one like this. There are black widows around also. Not sure if that matters. Was not fast moving able to catch it and put it in a safe area away from the pets / kids and truck while working.
Thank you for moving her to a safer spot. I cringe when my cat or dog suddenly eats the spider or insect I’m photographing. Sorry bugs! I’ve only seen one of this species, in a park in tall grass and low plants. They sometimes get really melodramatic and shake their webs violently to look scary. It works. They are orbweavers, they make the circular webs. “Garden Spider” is just a common name for some of the larger species.
Yours will make an egg sac in Autumn. She’ll probably hide it.
